| Background |
Educational development started in Nepal after the
elimination of the 104 years authoritarian Rana-regime in 1951. The civil
society at the time was very much deprived of basic services relating to economical,
political, social and moreover educational aspects. Immediately after the inception of
democracy, tremendous achievement was observed in establishment of public
schools.
It was as early as 57 years back, in 1951, that the conscious members in the local
communities of Kopundole, Patan, started to voluntarily provide a few hours a day
in imparting school education for local children at public places like temple
basements, satals, as there was no appropriate and adequate building for this undertaking. Gradually, with the support of local elderly people and senior
citizens, the schooling was allowed to move indoors in a local temple nearby the
present school building in Kopundole.
After a few years of continuous efforts and appeals, the founders and well-wishers of the school managed to get access to the present historical public
building in Kopundole for schooling, and it finally came under the ownership of the school and became known as the Shree Pragati Siksha Sadan.
It is important to note that there were very few public schools in Kathmandu valley at the time of its inception. The new education policy in 1971 (BS 2028 B.S.) put in place by the government was flexible in allowing schools to be started by the private sector, and thus, in the early 1990s, a rapid growth of such private boarding schools took place. These private schools began to attract enrollment from the well-off families, and soon exceeded public schools in education and facilities.
As the founders, volunteers, and well-wishers of the present school were
determined to retain Pragati as a public school meant for the community instead of converting it
into a private school, the government (i.e., District Education Office) conceded and agreed to let it remain as a public community school. As a result, the
children of the poor, disadvantaged, and socially-excluded families in the local areas were presented with the opportunity for decent education without the financial capital needed to enroll in private schools, and thus continued to receive education from Pragati Siksha Sadan.
Thus, at present, the school is well-recognized as a mosaic for children
coming from diverse cultures, ethnicity and tribes. Here, one can find pupils
originating from the mountainous regions to the terai plains, from the eastern rivers to the western slopes, and from every walk of life all across the country. Pragati stands as a beacon of hope and an enduring light for all children who wish for a proper education. Now the school is affiliated to HSEB and running Classes in +2 in Management.
